CrowdNewsroom is a crowdsourcing platform built by the German non-profit publisher Correctiv. The platform launched in 2015 and aims to gather data for large-scale investigations while fostering collaboration between newsrooms and readers.

According to this great article from the Lenfest Institute, the process works as follows: Correctiv partners with a local newsroom on a specific subject and they ask their respective readers to send relevant contributions (only if they have verifiable documents to back their claims). During about a month, they collect the data and engage the community with related articles. Then, the two newsrooms verify the data and and proceed with their investigation.

The model has been working for several years in Germany – collecting data from 4.000 individuals on subjects like property ownership or irregularities in local banks. CrowdNewsroom is now expected to launch soon in English.
