Quartz is launching a new app which aggregates news stories from various publishers and surfaces “intelligent” comments (mostly from select business influencers).
The app is well executed and applies a ‘social proofing’ strategy to the news experience — something that was so far commonplace for social networks like Facebook, LinkedIn or Medium, but surprisingly not so much in the news business. It’s also an interesting take in fostering a healthy environment for discussion, and I’m looking forward to see how that plays once regular users will come along so-called “community leaders”.
Overall, the whole thing makes sense for a business publisher like Quartz, which wants to tap into the digital networking habits of ambitious and young people. The move is also clearly inspired by Quartz’s new sister brand NewsPicks, an app founded by the Japanese media group Uzabase (who bought Quartz earlier this year from Atlantic Media).
