A new study finds that race and economic status are still deeply correlated in America. The Upshot chose to illustrate this segregation machine with a steady stream of squares (some of them for rich black boys, the other ones for rich white boys) that slowly divides itself into five income categories. Of course, most black boys end up on the middle and lower classes.
It’s incredibly powerful, simply data visualisation at its best.
And Twitter almost crashed about it:
I’ve never seen a better graphical representation of the reproduction of inequality and racial gaps. So good. https://t.co/fVzTMDKYil

This study is devastating, and the NYT’s visualizations of it are amazing. https://t.co/H34VMIXskB
